Lake Manapouri
Sir,—The news that a Government holding power by one vote has offered the priceless beauties of Lake Manapouri to be ravaged by soulless overseas mining interests is just appalling. The statements made are false in several ways. Consolidated Zinc is British, not Australian. Raising the lake level by 100 feet will swamp many attractive beaches and bushclad islands, and leave visible only a small portion of the highest islands. The transport of 250,00 tons of ore up the lake annually means the establishment of two busy ports. The immense factory needed to refine such quantites of ore cannot be anything but an eyesore. What can be done? I suggest letters by the hundred to members of Parliament and that the National Party be urged to commit itself to a withdrawal of any franchise granted by the present Government Consolidated Zinc must be warned that the possession of sufficient resources to buy anything is of no avail against the determination of New Zealanders to preserve for all time their heritage of world-famed scenery. —Yours, etc..
