Amalgamation
Sir, —The action of the Local Government Commission over the proposed Lincoln County amalgamation suggests that its powers should be reduced and not increased. ■ Voting on the previous similar proposal showed that the rural areas favoured and the urban areas opposed amalgamation. This expected result merely reflected the lack of common interest in the two areas, especially in Paparua County The obvious scheme is to form a rural Lincoln County and an urban Paparua separated by the proposed green belt. Some of the rural counties in Canterbury are too small but the persistence of the Local Government Commission in this scheme to amalgamate a rural area with a suburb of Christchurch indicates a disregard for the important principle of community interesf which should not be rewarded by increased powers of coercive amalgamation.—Yours, etc., PAPARUA RATEPAYER.
