Northcote
Sir.—lt is a pity that the Waimairi County Council has turned j down the recommendation of the Post Office that Northcote be called Papanui North—which it is Northcote is the name of a road, not of a district. Confusion arises in the present situation. For example. both Anglican and Presbyterian Churches. about a quarter of a mile from Northcote road, are called Styx, after the district they serve; a shop across the road from one of them is named the North Papanui Stores; Midland buses plying in some cases, nearly to the Styx overhead bridge, carry the destination sign. Northcote: recent newspaper reports have referred to Dunedin street and Mottram street as being in Northcote. The choice of a name for a district has little relevance to the length of a councillor’s pants in the remote part. Since then, the district, like the councillor, has grown.—Yours, etc., NORTH PAPANUI RATEPAYER. September 18, 1959.
