From left are Max Schmidt (leader of the choir), Anneliese Mayr (Mary Magdalene), Jrmgard Dengg (the Virgin Mary), Anton Preisinger (Christ), and Werner Bierling (St. John). Mr Preisinger has twice before portrayed Our Lord. This photograph was taken when 125 leading roles were allocated after a special religious service had been held. There will be about 1400 performers in the play. The first Oberammergau passion play was performed in 1633, when the villagers vowed that they would perform the play every 10 years as a token of gratitude for deliverance from a plague.
