Proposed Appeal For Funds

The New Zealand Hockey Association will suggest to the Council of toe New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association that the council organise a public appeal to raise funds to send the largest possible New Zealand team to the 1960 Olympic Games at Rome. This was decided by a meeting of the management committee of toe hockey association. The motion said:—“That we Intimate to the New Zealand Olympic Council that we are anxious to ensure that a hockey team goes to Rome, that we are raising funds of oUr own, and that we respectfully urge it to make a public appeal so that toe largest possible con tin-, gent goes to the Rome Games.” The committee acceded to a request from the New Zealand eselctor (Mr E. G. McLeod) that a trial match between a New Zealand side and the rest be organised before the end of this season. The committee will confer with Mr McLeod as to his drawing up a list of players who are under consideration for inclusion in the Olympic Games team, so that they may continue their training throughout the summer.

The Poverty Bay association advised that, at the next annual meeting of the New Zealand association. ft would move to amend the rule* for the Junior Cup competition. This would reduce the age limit from 21 to I®. and relax the restriction on the eligibility of plaver* who have represented their province in senior' fixtures. Fifty school team* have been entered in the four tournaments held under the auspice* of the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Hockey Association. Thirty-two teams will take part in the Auckland tourney and six each at Walroa. New Plymouth and Gore. The tournaments will commence on Tuesday. Hatch Cup Selectors Eight teams will compete tn the Hatch Cup tournament. Island selectors for the tournament were appointed as follows: North Island. Messrs H. C. Clarke (Wellington) and G. Slade (Poverty Bay). South Island. Messrs A. English (Otago) and J. Kennedy (Nelson).

Mr B. Cox, who was manager of the Maadi Cup team which recently toured Australia, reported on the attitude of the Australian Hockey Associaiton towards the billeting of players on international tours. It had been suggested that players could be billeted on such tours to save expense Mr Cox said that the system had worked well as far as his tour was concerned. Mr M. J. Cooper, of Auckland, was apointed manager of the North Island Minor Associations’ team.
