(New Zealand Preet Association) DUNEDIN, August 23. Show Place raced right up to bis ?’ood recent placed form to win he B. S. Irwin Steeplechase for amateur riders at Wingatui on Saturday. He led over the last mile and won by a clear margin from Flying Doctor with Almanac finishing strongly for third. Dunstan Night and Gazette were leading from Show Place with a round to go, with Haughty Step ahead of Flying Doctor and Almanac. Show Place led Into the back and he was joined by Haughty Step shortly after, with Gazette, Flying Doctor and Dunstan Night heading the others. Show Place had Haughty Step beaten with five furlong to run, hut he was soon joined by Flying Doctor. At the water jump Show Place jumped Into a dear lead again, and he carried on to win comfortably by four lengths from Flying Doctor. Almanac finished strongly for third a length back, with three lengths to Haughty Step and 10 lengths to Sweet Column, which made up a lot of ground over the last mile. Gazette headed the others. She was back in tenth place at the home turn but moved up to be within range of the leaders at the straight entrance inside the furlong. She challenged the leaders Madam Curie. Strathmaris and Surapt, and came on to win going away by three-quarters of a length Madam Curie was one of the leaders throughout, sharing the pacemaking with Strathmaris at the halfmile and still disputing the lead at the top of the straight. Golden Glynnis, Soulat and Surapt, which was well placed to the turn. Air Charm’s Win Air Charm was always in the first three in the Taieri Handicap and after running up to the pacemaker. Valaris, near the furtong, she came on to win by a clear margin. Supreme Effort lost ground at the start and Mary Brown drifted to the rear. Beginning the final furlong Valaris had been joined by Air Charm, the pair being two lengths clear of Kelton. Valaris hung out on Air Charm, but no sooner was the last-named clear than she ran in towards the rails. Air Charm carried on to win decisively by two lengths from Valaris which beat Kelton by two and a half lengths for second. Moon el Nil made up ground for fourth two lengths back, with Supreme Effort right up in fifth place. They were followed in by Mary Brown. Consistent and Cassock Rose ahead of Well Now. Favourite Succeeds Half Quid Justified her favouritism in the Trial Stakes when she finished brilliantly to win going away. Half Quid was not sighted in the early running and at the half-mile was giving the leaders a good start. It was a creditable effort. Panther and Hawkswood were badly away Mulvey was soon in charge and he made the running to the straight from Defend. King Pickle, Nelson's Neptune. Happy Link. Listen and Lingering in a strung out field. Mulvey was beaten at the furlong, where Nelson’s Neptune and Depend took over and Happy Link was right up next, with Haft Quid showing up. Half Quid carried on to beat Depend by a neck, with Nelson’s Neptune two and a half lengths back third and a length and a half to Happy Link in fourth place. There was a gap of four lengths to Listen, which made a good showing ahead of King Pickle, Lingering. Joe Boy and Legal Credit. Pussy willow was checked at the half-mile.
