ARREST ORDER WITHDRAWN
Haitian Prelate To Remain Free
(Rec. 7 p.m.) PORT AU PRINCE (Haiti), . August 21
The Haitian Government today abruptly withdrew an order for the arrest of Monsignor Francois Poirier, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port au Prince. The arrest order, in a widening split between the Government and Church in predominantly Roman Catholic Haiti, had brought the threat of ex-com-munication for leaders of the negro republic. Friction between Church and State here has been growing since a heated debate began in Parliament on Wednesday on the expiration next year of the convention of 1860 governing relations between them.
The Archbishop had been ordered seized after he ignored a summons to appear at the district attorney’s office.
