The Penal System
Sir,—l commend to the notice of your readers the remarks of Mr Astley, S.M., as reported on page 10 of today’s issue under the heading. “Seven Youths Sentenced.” If there were more of the same clear, realistic thinking and straight-from-the-shoulder remarks New Zealand would be a better place for all but the lawbreaking fraternity. There is an element of humour, serious though the matter be, in an item lower down on the same page. In this case a man with more convictions than he has had birthdays is warned that this is his last chance. If the man concerned had been 75 rather than 65 it is a pretty safe bet that exactly the same warning would have been given to him. -Yours, etc., BE FIRM. August 21, 1959.
