.'Sir,— I must thank “M.T.” and Proteus” for their remarks, so illuminating and so entirely relevant “Proteus” seems to have a rare poison-obsession, a matter for the psychiatrist. I still hold that a signature that conceals the identity of the writer may rightly be called a nom-de-plume. This, no doubt, is perversity. Would you, sir, care to give a ruling? I still believe, too, that knowledge is the essential basis of valid criticism. More perversity? As the public have doubtless seen enough of our oddities, ingenuity, wit, humour, and perversity, I propose now to leave the field to the others; they may put up innocuous verbal smokescreens and fire off their blank cartridges to their hearts' content I am tempted to sign as “Red Herring” but must keep to the rule. Finally, I appreciate the latitude that has been allowed us.—Yours, etc., 15503. August 20, 1959.
