RADIATION TESTS

Work On Royalist Cruise . (Rec. 9 p.m.) ABOARD H.M.N.Z.S. ROYALIST, July 17. A geiger counter from the cruiser H.M.N.Z.S. Royalist will be used in a survey of natural radioactivity in New Zealand island territories during the current Vice-Regal tour of the Pacific Samples of earth, animal and bird bones and guano from the islands, together with sea water from several points on the route, are to be brought back to New Zealand for testing. The project is being carried out for Sir Ernest Marsden who recently completed a year’s work for the. Royal Cancer Hospital. The focal point of the survey

will be Niue. Sir Ernest Mars* den said recently that earth at parts of that island showed radioactivity much higher than that of normal soils. Sea water samples will be boiled on board the Royalist, the residual salt being sent back to determine the normal radioactivity count. The work will be done during the cruise by Sub-Lieutenant W A. R. Mitchell, of Auckland.
