Harriers CHAMPIONSHIP FOR COLTS

Canterbury Title Approved

A Canterbury harrier championship for colts (under 16) runners will be held from next year. This was agreed to by delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the crosscountry management, committee of the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.

Previously the championship has been conducted on a metropolitan basis. Moving the championship be conducted as a Canterbury title event from 1960, and that it be held in conjunction with the other Canterbury titles, Mr G. E. Voller said it had been stated Christchurch was one of the clubs opposed to colts travelling. The rule restricting their travelling had been abolished and the club, seeing the progress of the times, was in favour of the change to a Canterburv title race for colts. The South Canterbury sub-centre will no longer be automatically entitled to representation on the Canterbury selection panel as the result of another remit passed. The meeting adopted a remit that the panel consist of two members only, who will be elected at the annual meeting each year. Championships at Rosewill South Canterbury will conduct this year’s Canterbury titles over the Rosewill course, said Mr H. O. Savage, the South Canterbury delegate. Some slight changes have been made, however, to eliminate obstacles and a section of downhill running. A new system of finishing and computing teams’ results will be tried for the Ilalswell race on July 11. The secretary (Mr H. G. Hattawav> said competitors would be passed through a chute in their order of finishing. As they emerged they would be given numbered cards indicating their place. Team managers would then total the teams’ points and hand the tabulated details to |an official checker. j The system was expected to result |in a considerable saving of time, said Mr Hattaway.
