HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Award Presented To Mr J. R. Templin
The associateship of honour, the highest award of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, was conferred last evening on Mr J. R. Templin, of Christchurch, at a meeting of the Canterbury branch. Mr M. J. Barnett, chief examiner of the institute and a former Dominion president, made the presentation. Part of the citation that Mr Barnett read before making the presentation said that: “Few men have done more for hortciulture in Canterbury than Mr Templin, and it has all been done in a most unassuming manner, without any suspicion of personal gain or self aggrandisement.” The citation referred to the outstanding service Mr Templin has given to horticulture in the last 30 years. He has held a number of executive positions in the Canterbury branch, including chairman from 1942 to 1956. His work in introducing women’s garden clubs and as chairman of the management committee in planning for a horticulture hall to cost £200,000, was also mentioned in the citation.
The National Diploma of Horticulture and the Cockayne Gold Medal were presented to Mr L. C. Metcalf. Making this presentation, Mr Barnett said that Mr Metcalf was already well known in many fields of horticulture and had experience in Australia, England and Europe. He was the third city man to receive the medal, Mr Barnett said. The medal was only awarded to candidates gaining the highest marks in the certificate examinations, said Mr Barnett. A certificate for completing the junior section of the National Diploma in Horticulture was presented to Mr E. J. Martin. Mention was also made of Messrs H. Vanden Bosch and A. Morgan, who have completed the intermediate section of the diploma. Fellowship certificates were presented to Messrs F. F. Bonisch, horticulturist foreman at Canterbury Agricultural College, S. Challenger, lecturer in horticulture at the college, J. Coombe, senior horticultural instructor for the Department of Agriculture, and E. W. Cotter, a prominent daffodil grower, breeder and exhibitor.
