GALE WARNING TO SHIPPING

Heavy Seas Off Bay Of Plenty

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 24.

The Weather Office today issued a gale warning to ships at sea. Mountainous seas and winds reaching gale force extend from' the Bay of Plenty to the Kermadecs, 500 miles north-east of New Zealand. A depression north of Northland and an anti-cyclone east of Cook Strait are the causes. In Auckland a warning was issued to shipping in the harbour area. South-east to easterly winds of 25 to 30 knots and gusting up to 40 knots are expected in the .next two days. Several gusts of 36 knots were reported on the harbour today. More than 20 trawlers remained in port today because of the conditions at sea. The German cargo ship Gustav Pistor en route from North America to Auckland with a timber cargo, is expected tomorrow, a day behind schedule.. The ship’s master (Captain Richard Bueschler) today reported that the ship was battered on Wednesday by rough seas and strong winds. The Eastern Star, with six passengers aboard, arrived here this afternoon several hours behind schedule on a voyage from Japan and Hong Kong, via Australia.
