(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 11. A United States Coast Guard aircraft dropped a 9851 b incendiary bomb on a huge iceberg yesterday, but the attempt to find a new method of clearing icebergs from North Atlantic shipping lanes failed, the ,“New York Times” reported today. A proximity fuse exploded the bomb 300 ft above the 18-storeys high iceberg, scattering 22 smaller bombs on one face. The iceberg was believed to d-eigh a million tons. . . The bombs sent up a hugh cloud of steam, but the iceberg did not crack up under the stress set up by the heat, as had been hoped. The bombings will go on, however. The trial is an attempt to alleviate increasingly dangerous conditions in the shipping lanes : of the busy North Atlantic. This spring has been one of the three most severe iceberg seasons since the liner Titanic sank In 1912. i ;
