ADDINGTON MARKET Sharply Easier Values In Store Calf Sale

It is a long time since conditions have been so unpleasant as they were at Addington market yesterday. The store sheep and store cattle sales were held in cold driving rain. These conditions meant that smaller galleries followed the sheep sales, which are held in the open, but for the cattle sale, at which there is some shelter, there was a surprisingly large following.

Under conditions of reduced competition prices came back in nearly all sections. Heifer and steer calves of average and lesser quality and condition were cheaper by 20s to 40s and adult cattle were also easier. A line of more than 200 station two and a half year old steers averaged between £29 and £39 a head.

Apart from the best lambs, store lambs were easier by fully 4s to 5s and in the adult sheep section older ewes of inferior quality showed an easing. In these sections there were a number of passings. The entry of store sheep totalled 8158 compared with 11,254 last week and comprised 4764 lambs, 261 two-tooth ewes, 2717 older ewes and 416 wethers. STORE LAMBS

For a smallish yarding of store lambs, there was a weak market, except for the very best. The entry totalled 4764, compared with 5957 last week. The weather certainly did not improve the appearance of the lambs, but on the whole quality was no more than fair.

The day did not favour the sale. The gallery was small and with the onset of wintry conditions farmers could hardly be expected to be very enthusiastic about taking on more lambs. Still, for the few good pens of lambs there was still a reasonably good sale, with values close to late rates to a shade easier. For medium and lower condition sheep, however, values were generally back 4s or 5s and in cases much more, and a number of pens had to be passed in.

Wether lambs sold to 43s for Down cross and to 40s for Romneys, with good lambs making from 34s upwards, average 24s to 30s, and light and plain from 14s to 225. Shorn wether lambs made from 33s 6d to 38s for the best, and 26s to 30s for the balance. A pen of Corriedale ewe lambs brought 43s 6d, with other ewe lambs at 13s to 17s 6d.

S. Henderson (Kaituna) received 43s for 32 Down cross, and for 100 Corriedales the estate R. B. Johnson (Sandhurst) secured 40s 6d. Forty-three Romney wether lambs from E. P. Hole (Timaru) realised 40s, and J. G. Cran (Windwhistle) was paid 39s for 98 halfbreds. A small consignment of 21 shorn wether lambs from P. O. Legg (Sheffield) made 38s. For 123 Corriedale ewe lambs, E. A. Dennis (Hororata) obtained 43s 6d. Sales included:—

EWES There were only about half a dozen pens of two-tooth ewes of ordinary quality, and at auction only about one of these found a buyer at There was a small yarding of older ewes of mediocre quality, and the sale attracted only a small following of purchasers and spectators. For the few serviceable sheep on offer there was an inquiry at from par to 2s easier, but for nondescript types which would have been hard selling on any day, sales were difficult to make at even 3s to 4s easier, and some pens did not find buyers at all. The best of the selection sold at 34s to 355. with average at 22s to 28s. and others at 10s to 15s. Top price for older ewes was 355. said for the tops of 213 four-vear-old halfbreds mated with Southdown rams on April 1 from R. L.
