BOILER HOUSE AT UNIVERSITY
Residents’ Protest-
Meeting
Residents of the Ilam area, near the site of the new engineering school for the University of Canterbury will hold a meeting in the Ilam School on Thursday evening to discuss the possible inconvenience arising from the coalfired boilers planned for the new university. The Ministry of Works has plans to Construct a boiler house containing two coal-fired boilers and serviced by two high stacks, says a circular to residents. The proposed site is within 100 ft of residential properties on the bend of Montana avenue. “It is considered that the construction of a coal-fired boiler is quite unrealistic in these enlightened times, and has little regard for the creation of a nuisance in. an otherwise ’clean air suburb,” say the circular. A petition signed by 80 residents, was submitted to the Ministry of Works, but the residents considered the reply to be unsatisfactory. “You should be present to register your protest and support the small committee now acting in your interests.” says the circular.
