WEEK-END FIRES

Brigade Answers Nine Calls The Christchurch Fire Brigade was called to nine fires, three of them grass fires which broke out yesterday afternoon, during, the week-end.

Forty batteries were damaged when fire broke out in a battery trough at Amalgamated Batteries, Ltd., Garlands road, at 5.7 a.m. on Saturday. One unit from the Central fire brigade and one from Woolston attended the outbreak, which was quickly brought under control.

A fire by a water heater in a property at 10 Cardiff avenue, occupied by Gladys Eatwell, was attended by one unit from the Central fire brigade at 1.4 p.m. Slight damage was caused. When paint was being, burnt off at 10 North parade, occupied by Mr D. Reid, the weatherboards of the house caught alight. One unit from the St. Albans fire brigade, which attended at 4.25 p.m„ extinguished the fire. Slight damage was caused.

A fire in a car in Cranford street was attended by one unit from the St. Albans fire brigade at 1.45 p.m. Slight damage was caused to the wiring. The first call yesterday was at 11.51 a.m. to the corner of Armagh street and Barbadoes street where a motor-cycle had caught alight. Two units from the Central fire brigade attended. The motor-cycle, which is owned by Mr A. Norman, of 225 Armagh street, was slightly damaged.

Units from the St. Albans and Central fire brigades extinguished a grass fire in Harper avenue at 12.21 p.m. and at 12.50 p.m. units from the Sydenham and Central fire brigades were called to another grass fire in Cashmere road, near the new Cashmere Hospital. Both fires were extinguished before they caused any damage. A grass fire, which broke out on a vacant section' in Stanbury avenue, Somerfield, yesterday afternoon spread to two adjoining properties in Conway street, destroying 24ft of paling fence, before firemen were able to bring the fire under control. Units from the Central and Sydenham fire brigades attended at 4.23 p.m. An electric sign on a shop, owned by lan Hamilton, at 83 High street, caught alight late yesterday afternoon. One unit from the Central fire brigade attendd at 5.3 p.m. No damage was caused.
