Women’s Bowls MAREWA WINS FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN

The Marewa four retained the New Zealand women’s fours bowling title on Saturday morning by beating Momington 23-12. The teams were:—Marewa, Mesdames P. Forward, D. Pierson, S. Winstanley, M. Nicol; Mornington, Mesdames G. Beryman, R, O’Brien, C. F. Turner. A. C. Cayzer.

The score was not a true indication of the game. The Momington four played exacting bowls, but Marewa was able many times to turn the head to advantage. Momington’s effort was really good as it was only a scratch rink, which came to the tournament for two weeks of' bowling and a holiday, while Marewa was the champion four. Mesdames Winstanley and Nicol were also the pairs champions in 1957 and 1958. On the first head, the players seemed to be feeling their way on a green that was holding a little, and did not appear to be taking a wide draw.. This head was open until Mrs Turner drew the shot and then Mrs Nicol, with her first bowl, rested this shot to lie two, which remained. There was close drawing on the next head and Marewa was holding four shots when the skips went down to play their bowls. Mrs Cayzer. with a good running shot, saved two? Mrs Forward gave her skip two shots in a reasonably close head which Mrs Turner opened, but was still two down. All now rested on 1 Mrs Cayzer and she drew a toucher to take the head with one shot. Being two down when she left the head, Mrs Cayzer played a running shot but just missed and then Mrs Nicol positioned her bowl for a drive but this failed.

The next head .the fifth, was rather wide and Marewa took one shot to lead 7-1.

Mrs O’Brien, on the next head, drew the shot, which was never shifted and this gave Momington the' second shot. Being two shots down on the next head Mrs Nicol ran at the head and took out one but failed to change the head with her last bowl. Luck With Marewa Luck was ,with Marewa on the next head. When two shots down, Mrs 1 Pierson knocked off a wing bowl and ran in for shot. Then Mrs Nicol with her first also wicked off a bowl to give her a second shot and then she drew a third with her last. Mrs Cayzer had little chance of changing the head and was a little wide with her last. The ninth head was full of interest, with the Mornington players getting on top to hold three shots, until Mrs Nicol, with a perfect trail, took the kitty back for three. Mrs Cayzer played with two delightful running shots, taking out a shot with each to be only one down. The skips bowled excellently on the next head. Mornington was holding two shots until Mrs Nicol drew inside, thbn Mrs Cayzer, with a perfect trail, took the kitty back for one, only to have Mrs Nicol draw inside to take away the shot. Excitement ran high on the next head, which changed often. Mrs Beryman drew a toucher and then Mrs O’Brien took out Marewa’s second shot to lie three, which did not last very long for Mrs Nicol took out the shot bowl and shifted the kitty to be four up. Mrs Cayzer turned the head to her favour when she drew right on the kitty for shot. On the next head. Mornington held one shot. The next head was exciting with honours going to Momington. After being two up and requiring further shots, Mrs Turner, with a running shot to shift a bowl, flicked the kitty to go one down and then with her next bowl played a great running shot to take the kitty back to near the ditch and follow it through. Unfortunately her bowl went out of bounds and she was still one down. Mrs Cayzer then drew the shot, but Mrs Nicol,, with another wick off a short bowl, ran down on to the kitty. Mrs Cayzer earned great applause for her running shot at a bare bowl, which she turned out to lie by the kitty for two shots. At this stage Marewa was still holding the lead 12-7. Lead increased Marewa won the next two heads with a single and a two and then on the next Mrs Cayzer trailed the kitty for two shots and was then eight down with four heads left to play. Mornington was right off on the next head and when the skips changed over Marewa was holding three shots, to which Mrs Nicol added another with a lucky wick. Mrs Cayzer tried a running shot, but it was hard to get into the head and she failed.

Changing fortunes on the twentieth head gave Mrs Cayzer three shots and then on the last Marewa held shot to win a very exciting game. Mrs Cayzer is without doubt one

of the greatest exponents of the running shot amongst women bowlers and these shots paved the way for her to reach the final. Third Place Mrs Pirrie’s Dallington four definitely deserved third place. The four played excellent bowls throughout the tournament, with each member rising to the occasion when necessary. In the play-off for third place against Mrs Butterworth’s Tepapapa four, the Dallington team, with a seven on the second head, went away to a good lead to be 14-2 up by the seventh head. Tepapapa fought back and although it took the lead 17-15 on the eighteenth head it just could not withstand the accurate drawing by Dallington and the game ended 26-22. Results, were:— Final—Mesdames Forward, Pierson, Winstanley and Nicol (Marewa) Play-off for third place—Mesdames Campbell, Milliken, Greenwood and Pirrie (Dallington) 26, Mesdames Hassan, Wells, Haworth, and Butterworth (Tepapapa) 22.
