Good Fieldsman
Because of the fast, bumpy nature of the outfield, ground fielding was not easy, but McKinney was brilliant at cover and proved the outstanding fieldsman of the tournament. Many excellent catches were taken, especially close to the wicket. The pitches were not as good as could be expected; both were rather lively and one almost dangerous on the last two days. The quicker bowlers were al a decided advantage as most batsmen found the i&’nß ball diffic fit The averages show that Thomson, Hill, and Hartland bore the brunt of the run getting, scoring 547 of the 790 runs scored from the bat. Thomson was consistent with 36. 90. and 97—a total of 223. This total was exceeded only by Murray (Wellington) and Murray only passed Thomson’s total in his fifth innings.
