109 Years On The Stage
(Special Correspondent N.ZP.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.)
, LONDON, January 12. Dame Sybil Thorndike, who is 76, and Sir Lewis Casson, aged 83, who celebrated their golden wedding just before Christmas, after a world tour which took them to Australia and New Zealand, appeared last night at the Globe Theatre in a play, “Eighty in the Shade.” It was specially written for them by Clemence Dane to celebrate their 50 years of married life.
The critics did not like the play much, but united in welcoming the Cassops back to the West End stage. Dame Sybil Thorndike plays the part of an actress who has been on the stage for 60 triumphant years and is celebrating her jubilee quietly in a country house. Sir Lewis Casson has a small part as her aged admirer. There was an ovation for Dame Sybil Thorndike when the curtain fell.
The “Daily Mail” calls Dame Sybil Thorndike and Sir Lewis Casson “our best loved veterans” and says they are to the theatre what the Churchills are to politics. Between them, they have been on the stage for 109 years.
