POPULARITY OF OPERAS
“Butterfly” Leads At Covent Garden
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, January 12. For the first time in its history Covent Garden has compiled an opera popularity poll. At the top of the list was Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” five performances of which in 1957-58 drew average attendances of 2167 opt of a possible 2219. ”
The runners-up were Wagner’s “Ring of the Nibelungs”-—two cycles—with an average of 2079, and Verdi’s “Aida”—l6 performances—with 2034.
Fourth was Berlioz’s *The Trojans at Carthage,” which had eight performances and drew an average of 2030. At the bottom of the list was Verdi’s “Rigoletto”—l2 performances, averaging 1186—and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”—five performances, averaging 1237.
