NEW ‘SWALLOW' AIRCRAFT
Wings Fold Baek When Airborne
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 12 Dr. Barnes Wallis headed a team of experts who left London last night by air lor New York, to discuss a combined Angld-Amcrican effort on his revolutionary “Swallow” aircraft project.
Dr. Wallis, who is 71. has designed the “Swallow” with wings to fold after take-off. to reduce air resistance.
He considered that it would fly at 1800 miles an hour. Four scientists who have worked with Dr. Wallis since his war-time invention of “bouncing bombs." which blasted the Ruhr dam. flew with him last night. Two Ministry of Supply officials were also in the s gj»rty on behalf of the British Government. The Government withdrew its support of the project on economy grounds early thi; year, and Dr. Wallis at first threatened to emigrate to the United States The object of the visit is a pooling of knowledge to explore further the possibility of a joint research effort on the “Swallow."
