“Carpetings” At Eton
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 11. In one of the biggest mass “carpetings’’ evci known at Eton. 200 boys have been "sentenced" to an extra hour’s swotting every night, for two weeks, the “Daily Mail" reported. This is their punishment for what happened on the 9.37 a.m. Windsor to Waterloo train on which they were travelling last Saturday. Fireworks were exploded among passengers and pea-shooters and water pistols were fired at railway staff. The boys had to face the music before the headmaster (Dr. Robert Birley) when they returned from their long leave week-end yesterday. In addition, the whole school of 1180 boys was warned that long leaves for visits to London would be curtailed if this sort of behaviour happened again. Dr. Birley and his staff are determined to cool down the rowdies after one of the roughest, most rebellious terms in Eton’s history Already this year four boys have been expelled and a Windsor coffee shop has been put out of bounds.
