NO BIRDS KILLED IN TRIALS
Statement From Mr Tirikatene
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 24. The Southland Acclimatisation Society this morning received a reply from the Minister of Forests (Mr Tirikatene), after it had writtetn to him objecting to the use of 1080 poison in the Caples Valley. Mr Tirikatene said: “I can assure you that I am also particularly concerned in the preservation of native bird life, and in the Caples Valley trials, all precautions have been taken to ensure the freedom from danger to human and native bird life. “The Forest and Bird Protection Society is kept advised of our trials, and the outcome regarding the effect on native bird life, and the society is satisfied that there is no significant danger to native bird life in Forest Service poisoning trials. In the Caples Valley trial, the result of which is not yet complete, no dead birds of any kind have been found.”
