PATIENTS’ LIBRARY SERVICE

Because of the Health Department’s policy on patients’ library services, the North Canterbury Hospital Board is no longer able to maintain the salary of the librarian at the Cashmere Sanatorium.

The salary had been the responsibility of the board for only' two months, said Mr L. Christie, at yesterday’s meeting of the board. Before, the salary cost was shared by the board and the Tuberculosis Association. Other boards were reliant on professional librarian services. The Department’s decision was a retrograde step. Mr H. A. Bennett said he understood that no difficulty would be found in raising the finance to continue the librarian’s services at the sanatorium. The board decided to ask the public health committee to give further consideration of the principle of the Department’s policy.
