CONFERENCE ON NEW GUINEA

Co-ordination Of Administration

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, September 22.

Major detailed proposals for coordination of administrative policies of Australia and the Netherlands in the development of the two halves of the island of New Guinea may result from a conference which will begin in Canberra on October 20.

It has been called in fulfilment of a decision between the Governments of Australia and the Netherlands that the closest possible unity of administrative policy should be followed in the two sections of New Guinea.

The Government, it is thought, believes that if the development of the native peoples in the two halves of the island is achieved on a common basis, there will be an initial easing of administrative problems.

Ultimately the parallel development of the native population *will assist the native peoples of New Guinea in deciding the future of the territory when it is ready for self government.
