The Emperor’s Cutlery

LONDON. One of the largest and most valuable canteens of sterling silver cutlery ever made in Britain has been dispatched to the Emperor of Ethiopia. It contains 3278 pieces, each carrying the elaborate royal crest, and the entire canteen —enough for a banquet of 100 —was completed in just two months after the firm was told it was needed urgently. The canteen, which is worth many thousands of pounds and contains 10,000 ounces of silver, is housed in a 42-drawer teakwood cabinet built up from. seven separate units. The cutlery and cabinet together weigh nearly a ton and a chart has been drawn up in both English and Amharic detailing the contents of each drawer.

King’s Pattern was chosen for the cutlery. “We find this traditional and classic style is far more popular than ultra-modern designs with our Middle Eastern clients. And, of course, there is no doubt that the British hallmark is also a great attraction,” said a representative of the firm. The stamping on the Emperor’s cutlery was done by 73-year-old Mr James Shaw, who has been with the company for nearly 60 yearjL
