CROP SPRAYING BAN

Department Warns 'Growers A warning to growers of brassica seed crops that the spraying or dusting of flowering crops with materials that are toxic to bees is prohibited from September to the end of March has been issued by the Department of Agriculture. The prohibition applies to brassica field crops such as rape, ch ou moellier, swedes and turnips, and to leguminous field crops such as clovers and lucerne. The reponsibility for deciding whether the dust or spray is toxic to bees and whether the crop comes within the scope of the regulations rests with the applicator of the material and the owner of the crop.

The department may issue a permit for the treatment of crops during the prohibited period where there are no apiaries or hives in the vicinity or when the damage to the crop by insect pests would be greater than the damage to bees and honey production resulting from the use of insecticides. Applications for permits should be made, preferably in person, to the local office of the department.
