WORK FOR CHURCH

“Talents” Given And Increased

Last June, 80 members/of the congregation of the Colombo Street Baptist Church received £l—a “talent” to be traded with, increased, and returned with the profit on September 21. This is the first time that such a campaign has been held in Christchurch, and the return is expected to exceed £4OO, the minister (The Rev. A. L. Silcock) said.

The scheme had given a great deal of satisfaction to some members who otherwise could do nothing, Mr Silcock said. A young woman and two. elderly women in hospital had been able to make toys and sell them, giving the money to the church. Originality has been the keynote for some ventures. One man who was a driving instructor during the war has a temporary driving school, another gives pony rides on Saturday mornings. Others have been cabinetmaking and gardening. Their wives, too, have been buying wool and knitting, getting the necessary materials and baking, making ’aprons, sweets, and marmalade. One husband and wife team has been doing some tailoring. Sieveral have bought and sold fruit (including lemons), vegetables, nuts and seed potatoes. Large numbers have earned more than £5, Mr Silcock said, some more than £lO, and one has made £l6. The money will be used for the interior redecoration of the church.
