INTER-SCHOOL MATCHES

Boys’ High School And Otago Christchurch Boys’ High School £ eat Otago Boys’ High School at ♦ soc Q er and hockey matches at Straven road. Christchurch won ® ach ~ V 3 Sames comfortably, and the Rugby team maintained its unbeaten record for the season. Rugby The Christchurch backline made some brilliant movements in the u match. The three-quarters had too much pace for their opponents, and scored three of the four * ie n' , christc hurch won by 23 points to 3, but the score could have been nigner as both wings narrowly missed scoring several times.

Otago used diever tactics In the lineouts and secured much of the ball. J. Nelson. R. Waby, and R. Thomson were especially good in this department, but when the ball wept to the backs they did little with it, and made no impression on a determined defence. The Christchurch backs were very enterprising in broken play, and the elusive running of the two wings. A, Steel and T. Simpson, often had the defence in confusion. Steel had tremendous pace, and he and the centre three-quarters. T. Brown, were the best backs on the field. Brown played intelligently, never attempted too much, and covered well on defence.

G. Bradley, at full-back, was most successful with his kicking, and converted all four tries, two of them from difficult angles. His all-round play was of a high standard. The forwards were evenly matched for most of the game, although in the last 10 minutes the Christchurch pack kept Otago penned on its goalline. R. Frengley, A. Aldersley, anc G. Britten den were especially active, and profited greatly from the indecision of the Otago five-eighths. The Otago backs had no answer to the speed of their opponents, and the forwards, after a good start, lost the initiative to a lighter and faster pack. . The best Otago back was the first five-eighths, J. Johnson, who tackled determinedly and kicked well on defence. The centre three-quarters, J. Masters, began well with some crashing tackles of Brown, but his defence slipped later, and he allowed Brown too much latitude. For Christchurch, Brown, Simpson, Steel and Frengley scored tries. Bradley kicked a penalty goal and converted four tries. For Otago, Johnson kicked a penalty goal. Soccer The passing and bail control of Christchurch were too good for the Otago soccer team, and Christchurch won by 7 goals to 2. The outstanding player for Christchurch was the inside left, B. Sayers, who scored three goals. The left-half, P. Kay, and the centre-forward, J. McNaught, and the inside-right, T. Haydon, all moved in position for their passes, and were accurate with their placements.

Haydon scored the first goal for Christchurch early in the game. Soon after D. Wilkinson, the leftwing, shot from a difficult angle, and the ball just' beat the Otago goalkeeper into the net. Christchurch used the wind intelligently, and kept Otago very much on the defensive. After several attempts to score had failed, Sayers scored from a rebound from a high shot by C. Burton.

With the wind behind it in the second spell, Otago was often in Christchurch’s territory, and when the Christchurch centre-half, R. Richardson, inadvertently flicked the ball behind him it went into his net and Otago gained a goal. C. Mooyman, left wing for Otago, trapped a shot from the centre and scored a good goal. Christchurch went deep into Otago’s territory, and from broken play near the goalmouth Sayers scored. Soon after he scored again.

Haydon trapped well from a centre by C. Burton, and slammed a hard shot past the Otago keeper. A few minutes later McNaught scored again for Christchurch.

Hockey Christchurch won the hockey match by 4 goals to 1. Christchurch had the better of play in the first spell and attacked down its right wing consistently. The Otago defence improved after an early lapse, and Christchurch found it difficult to break through to the Otago goal. The Otago forwards were formidable in the second half, but they showed a weakness in the Christchurch goal, and would have scored but for indecision before shooting.

For Christchurch goals were scored by G. Rothwell (2), R. Bailey, and D. Anthony. N. Howard scored for Otago.
