Protest Against New Lyttelton Rubbish Tip
A protest against any proposal to dump rubbish in any residential area in the borough was made in a petition bearing 150 signatures received at the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. The protest was the result of a proposal by the council to make a controlled tip above the top of Cornwall road, near the old quarry. The proposed site was a quarter of a mile away from the nearest houses, said Cr. A. M. Miller. He noticed that some' of the petitioners lived as far away as West Lyttelton and Corsair Bay. A tip at the quarry could not affect those persons. Properly controlled, the tip would not cause a nuisance.
The full story had not been told to the residents, said Cr. G. E. Boyd. They thought that the rubbish was just to be dumped into the gully. She would be moving into one of the nearest houses next month.
In reply to a question, the Borough Inspector (Mr H. G. Ablett) said the tipping would have to be properly controlled on the Bradford system. The rubbish must be covered immediately it was dumped. Unless carried out in the proper manner it would be useless, as it was at Corsair Bay. On the motion of Cr. Morris, the council decided to inform the petitioners that it had not made a final decision on the site, but if it was decided on. a proper system would be carried out and would give no cause for complaint An allegation that damage had been done to a ceiling in his house in Reserve terrace was made in a letter from Mr W Lumb, who complained of the blasting operations at the Harbour Board’s quarry. The Mayor (Mr F G. Briggs) told the meeting that the comnlaint bad been referred to the board. A reply had been received that on a suitable occasion, vibration measurements would be taken on Mr Lumb’s proper’? The council decided to send a copy of the board’s letter to Mr application was receive# from an amusement firm for permlsion to operate * miniature
train at Corsair Bay. In their letter the applicants said that with the exception of holiday periods the train would be operated possibly only on Sundays. The application was referred to the Mayor, Cr. A M. Miller and the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson), with power to act. A grant of £2 2s was made to the Workers’ Educational Association.
