Winning Double Payout “Breaks Bank” At Ashburton
On-course holders of tickets on the winning double “broke the bank” on the doubles totalisator at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The payout was suspended when the totalisator ran out of money. Automatic Totalisators. Ltd.. who run the machines, had to scrape hard to borrow the money from various sources on the course before the payout was continued. In the end. £BOOO was found to meet the deficiency in “kitty.” It is the first time in the history of totalisator betting in Canterbury that a totalisator bank has “gone broke.” On course, the totalisator collected £4OOO in
doubles betting, and when Timely Boy rounded off the double—the first leg was won by Purser—a dividend on the aggregate call—-on-course and off-course combined —of £155 5s was posted. The call was built up by offcourse investments of £27.000. compared with only £4OOO oncourse; but a bigger percentage of tickets was exchanged on Timely Boy on-course than off-course.j Totalisator Agency Board betting! money is not handed over to the. totalisator by the representatives' on the course. A balance is kept at the head office of the T.A.B. in Wellington and a cheque is posted to the club on the Monday after a meeting for the balance due for any on-course pay-out owed by the T.A.B.
