PARKING METERS NOT WANTED
Napier Petition To Parliament
"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, June 22.
A group of Napier businessmen has petitioned Parliament to intercede with the Napier City Council on their behalf by requesting or directing the council not to install parking meters. The petitioners want the installation delayed until the wishes of the citizens of Napier can be determined by a legally constituted referendum.
The petition also asks the House of Representatives to consider the advisability of introducing legislation whereby the actions of a city council could be restrained on the application through suitable channels of a sufficiently large group of citizens or ratepayers. Presented by Mr J. G. Edwards (Government, Napier), the petition follows the passing of a parking meter by-law by the Napier City Council. The petitioners state that before the by-law was passed the council was petitioned by 145 business men. In addition a “referendum’’ taken by the Napier Retailers’ Association resulted in 2615 signatures registered against the installation of parking meters and 355 signatures in favour.
