Headmasters

Sir,—Dr. F. G. Spurdie is to be congratulated on his forthrightness in drawing public attention to the fact that no Catholic teacher holds a post as principal of a State post-primary school in this Dominion. In many years’ experience as a post-prim-ary teacher, I have known of only one such appointment, that of a headmaster of a North Island secondary school In a truly secular system of education, promotion to the highest posts should be open to all, irrespective of creed. Catholic teachers give faithful and able service in State post-primary schools throughout the country, and any form of discrimination against applicants on account of their religious convictions is contrary to democratic principles.—Yours, etc., CATHOLIC GRADUATE/ June 20, 1958.
