Birthday Honours List

Sir, —As a warm admirer of the voluntary workers of this country it behoves me to say that Miss

E. L. Sapsford’s somewhat intemperate advocacy of their claims to official recognition is misplaced, and probably to them embarrassing. Virtue, as exemplified by charitable endeavours, should be. and usually is, its own reward. In England, where the record of unobtrusive and dedicated voluntary workers is probably higher than in any other country in the world, only those whose activities are multifarious and unceasing, receive (and then only occasion ally) some official recognition of their labours. In at least two cases known to me in this country a well-merited honour has been duly awarded on similar grounds Miss Sapsford’s sensitivity to shocks would, I fear, make her a poor insurance risk in this unfeeling world.—Yours, etc., , I.S.T. Jun® 20. 1958. ,
