CROSS-COUNTRY ORIENTATION

Olympic Club’s Event Members of the Olympic Harrier Club took part in a five-mile crosscountry orientation exercise over the Cashmere Hills on Saturday. Cross-country orientation exercises are popular in Scandinavia, where they also have value as military exercises, but the Olympic Club’s event is believed to be the first of the kind officially organised in Canterbury. The runners, dispatched from the start at one-minute intervals, were required to follow written instructions to the first of a series of check points, through vffiich they had to pass, subsequently receiving instructions at each check point for following the trail to the next point. Skill in the of a compass was necessary for correct following of the route, and lack of ability in this lost runners valuable time. At one stage, four runners, who were required to follow a certain compass bearing, were observed running in four different directions. The Olympic Club’s veteran runner, L. C. Richards, who has regularly competed in cross-country events for some 25 years, was first to the final check point. Placings were L. C. Richards 1, K. Lange 2, K. Barraclough 3.
