UNWANTED WHEAT AT WAIMATE

Difficulties Of Disposal

(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, March 21.

It was “ludicrous” that in days when the plea to farmers was “more wheat please” there should be 25.000 bags of unwanted wheat in the Waimate district said Mr D. Hulston at the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of Federated Farmers today. “The millers concerned with the Waimate district have said they have all the Arawa wheat they can take this year, with the result that growers are being forced to keep their wheat in the paddocks,” he said. “Cannot something be done to quit these stocks?” •Mr Hulston said the Arawatype wheat was not suitable for making into flour because of its low baking qualities. To make matters worse an Australian shipment was due, and all available railway trucks would be in use He suggested that the wheat committee be asked to arrange for the disposal of the wheat. Mr F. J. Henshaw said a lot of fowl wheat was required in the Dominion, and it might be possible to have the wheat sent to another part of the country. “We must do something to get rid of this wheal —it is a bad thing to have no market for it when the price of wheat has been increased by the .Government to attract growers.” The executive appointed a subcommittee to make representations to the federation’s delegate on the wheat committee.
