Youth Delinquency
Sir,—Mrs Sergei, in her address in police work by women, said: “The youth of today were not loved enough and parents should show their* feelings towards their children more openly.’’ This sounds very fine, but what if the parents have no feeling of love towards the children? In, this chaos of delinquency there is but one hope—the sanctity of marriage must be put before the people. The laws which man must observe to produce sound offspring are as scientific as the most advanced scientists could wish for. They are not understood today because of specialisa-
tion. To obtain a glimpse of the whole, there must be a wide survey of the different branches of science. If this survey is not made, there can be but a paucity of ideas for the association which alone can lead to wisdom through knowledge.—Yours, etc. M. G. DAVIES. March 20, 1958. Sir, —Dr. D. P. Ausubel suggests that a possible cause of delinquency arises from unnecessarily repressive discipline in our secondary schools. A similar system has been in lise for many years without these results. I would say it starts before the child goes to school. One has only to go shopping or to a public gathering to see how little control some parents have over their children. They resort to threats or promises in an effort to have them obey, never considering their responsibility to show by example and teaching that discipline, unpleasant as it may seem, is necessary if they want to live full and happy lives.— Yours, etc., March 19, 1958.
