Egg Prices

Sir, —While the New Zealand Poultry-Keepers’ Association may cackle on at Rotorua the wise hens just keep on laying. Many keepers progressed from army huts to fine homes quickly; not so retailers. It is odd that the law prevents their having markups sufficient to cover selling expenses on more lines than eggs. Nobody has greater chance of holding back eggs for. higher prices than the keepers have. Methinks they protest too freely. Retailers considered the last government as born waste masters of perishables, but in this freedom have a right to live profitably, so now they should also get subsidies. It would be a great elec-tion-winner. The city of satchels and scowling morning faces should ponder it.—Yours, etc., SUBSIDIES FOR ALL.
