Vandalism
Sir,—Referring to vandalism, Miss Howard pertinently remarked that when the boy reaches the age of 18 the damage is done. Her implication that the parent is not to blame is open to challenge. Suitable early home training, or lack of it. determines future conduct. Much is said about mothers having to go out to work but in our favoured land this should not be necessary except possibly where there are large families or where the regular breadwinner is laid aside. Some years ago a town in Oregon was infested by youthful miscreants, self-styled the Panther Gang. The authorities met the menace by prosecuting the parents and in two years there were only six convictions. Dad was not enamoured of the prospect of a fine of 200 dollars or 100 days in prison so Tommy obligingly conformed and reformed.—Yours, etc., HOPING. March 20, 1958.
