“Little Europe” Parliament

(Rec. 9 p.m.) STRASBOURG, March 20. The six-nation “Little Europe” Parliamentary Assembly is today expected to discuss Britain’s plan for a European Free Trade area. The plan, providing for an enlargement of the Common Market to include Britain and 16 other nations, has met opposition from France, which stipulates that agricultural products should be included in the area. Britain is reluctant to accept this as she wants to protect her favourable imports from Commonwealth countries. The assembly's one-day debate will cover speeches made by Ministers and community leaders yesterday and is also expected to include the choice of a permanent “Capital of Europe” to house all the joint “Little Europe” agencies. At yesterday’s meeting, the first since the assembly’s inception last year, Mr Robert Schuman, the 72-year-old French statesman, was chosen as President for the coming year.
