The Orari trainer, P. H. C. Stock saddled up the winner, Arctic Sun, and the runner-up, Column, in th£' Waihao Hack Hurdles at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday. Arctic Sun beat his stablemate by five lengths with Accountant battling on for third four lengths further back. Moilynn just held fourth place by a head from Composition, but he was beaten dff six lengths behind Accountant.

Mozart was the early leader, but he misjudged his leap at the second fence where he dropped his rider, and Arctic Sun took over. He led through the straight the first time by a length and a half from Accountant, with six lengths to Moilynn, a similar distance to Grey Valley, Escalado and Composition together, then Column, not jumping well, five lengths back at the rear. Accountant joined Arctic Sun racing into the back, but the latter had drawn out again by five lengths going to the halfmile. There Column was improving his position on the flat, but was still 10 lengths behind Accountant. Arctic Sun maintained his lead at the last fence and was not extended in the run home. Column made up ground quickly from the last fence and had the measure of Accountant just inside the furlong. Trial Plate Rhythm Reel lead throughout the Trial Plate and won, without being extended, by four lengths from Dower, which had raced in fifth place to the straight, and received a lucky opening on the inner coming to the furlong. Alonzo Lndy was a length and a half back third. She had been one of the slow beginners, but inside the first Quarter had moved un quickly to fourth, just ahead of Dower, and behind Rhyth Reel. Telaman and Benmore. She held off the fast-finishing Gharta, which had dwelt at the start and had only Great Blaze behind him at the half-mile, by threequartQrs of a length. Telaman weakened to fifth three lengths behind Ghana and a length ahead of Tarrus. Then there was a gap to which had dwelt at the start but had been rushed un to a trailing position in the fi’-st furionand another to Great Blaze, which did not go well in the conditions. Royal Resuonse Surprises The little fancied Royal Response. which had raced in about fifth place to the straight, in the Novice Handicap, forced his way through a gap on the insidfe of Central Kin" and Rendova about half a furlong from the finish and. unde** a hard ride, won by a neck. Central King beat Rendova by a nose for second. They had shared most of the pace over the last mile but could not withstand Royal Response’s final challenge. Starwyn. which had trailed throughout, battled on gamely for fourth a length behind Central Kin" and two lengths ahead of Jovdv. Beau Lad and Copnowa were *at the head of the others but they were beaten off six lengths behind Joydv. Successor and Ravina were the slowest beginners. Jesse Owens Wins Jesse Owens, which was having his first race since the beginning of

January, reached the lead with just more than two furlongs to run in the Studholme Intermediate Hack Handicap, and ran the race x>ut strongly to win by three-quarters of a length from Columban, the outsider of the field. The favourite, Sevicke, was two lengths back third, half a length in front of Kalan. Arrow Royal and Allfair were beaten off eight lengths behind Kalan, with Toddler a further 100 yards back at the rear. Jesse Owens was the first to show out, but he was eased in behind Allfair at the end of a furlong and a half. Toddler joined Allfair racing into the back, but drifted a furlong later and was last at the half mile. There, Arrow Royal moved forward to share the lead with Allfair, with Jesse Owens, Columban. and Sevicke next, ahead of Kalan. Arrow Royal compounded inside the next furlong, and Allfair was also feeling the strain when Jesse Owens took over on the turn. He led tor home from Sevicke and Columban and although the latter finished on, he did not look likely to trouble the winner. Brookfields Lad in Form Brookfields Lad proved too solid for his six opponents over the concluding stages of the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap, winning decisively by three lengths from Lo Night. E. G. Low had Brookfields Lad in the middle of the field early, but with six furlongs to run he had drifted and had only Nugget behind him. Yue Chee, which had made the pace from the start, was a length clear of Imshi Allah, with two lengths to Paper Clip and Free Trade together, and a length and a half to Lo Night. Nugget made a fast move from the back racing to the half mile, and Brookfields Lad followed her through. They joined Yue Chee in the lead half a furlong later, but Brookfields Lad was clear at the three. He led into the straight from Lo Night, with Paper Clip and Imshi Allah handiest of the remainder. Brookfields Lad did not look likely to surrender his lead in the run home, and Lo Night beat Paper Clip by six lengths tor second. There was another three lengths to Imshi Allah, which led in Free TrAie and Yue Chee, with Nugget beaten off at the rear. Easy Win for Barbara's Treasure Barbara’s Treasure shared the pace with Native King to the three furlongs in the Hook Hack Handicap, lost the lead temporarily to the favourite, Royal Dasher, coming to the straight, but ran out the last furlong strongly to win by five lengths from Native King, which came again over the last furlong to take second place two lengths ahead of Royal Dasher. Royal Dasher shared the trail with Tassin early, then with Bask until the half-mile. He moved up on the outside and shaded Barbara’s Treasure and Native King coming to the straight, and appeared as if he would hold second place at the furlong, but lost his advantage when he veered out under pressure near the finish. Bask battled on for fourth, six lengths behind Royal Dasher. He just shaded Believe Me, which had been in fifth place throughout. Tassin was six lengths back, sixth, two lengths ahead of Irish Saint, which had tailed off from the start and failed to improve.
