Gore Stablemates Win Waimate Legs

Members of the team of the Gore trainer, K. J. Cochrane, won three races, including both legs of the double, at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday.

Demolish, a retent graduate from hack company and a close eighth in a blanket finish to the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap a week earlier, gained a decisive win in the Waimate Cup, principal event and first leg of the double.

The Wingatui apprentice, H. T. Anderton, had the former . Ric-carton-trained Defaulter four-year-old handy to the lead at the end of the first half-mile. He took Demolish forward to challenge Appreciate and Silver King in the lead two furlongs later and he went clear before the straight. He ran the last furlong much too strongly for his nine opponents and beat Toparoa, the top-weight by four lengths. Silver King, the favourite for a win and also with double investors, was a disappointing third a length and a half behind Toparoa. Kinsimm, a stablemate of Demolish and Royal Response, which had won the Novice Handicap two races earlier, completed the double when she lasted to beat Count Aven by a nose in the second leg, the Morven Handicap. Both Kinsimm and Royal Response were ridden by T. A. Holland, who is apprenticed to R. J. Cochrane. He shared riding honours for the day with the Riccarton horseman, E. G. Low, who was successful on Jesse Owens and Brookfields Lad. In a total double pool of £14,889 15s, Demolish carried 3980 10s tickets, and the holders of 2678 5s units reinvested on Kinsimm received a double dividend of £lB 7s 6d for £l. The meeting opened in showery weather but intermittent periods of sunshine throughout the day made conditions reasonably pleasant. The track was soft and there was a *fair attendance. On-course investments amounted to £14,950, including £1333 10s on the double, compared with £18,103 10s last year, a decrease of £3153 10s. Waimate Cup Running Treasure Pond and Demolish began smartly from the two outside barrier positions in the Waimate Cup, but at the end of a furlong Appreciate had reached

the front. With a mile to run he was out by two lengths from Cruising and Silver King, then Treasure Pond, Pack Drill and Loyal Chief together, ahead of Demolish, in a gap on his own. Persia and Seadune were next, a length and a half ahead of Toparoa at the rear. Appreciate continued in the lead past the six furlongs, where Demolish had improved to follow Silver King, Loy.al Chief and Cruising, which were sharing the trail. Demolish and Silver King joined Appreciate in the lead at the half-mile, and they ran clear half a furlong later. At that stage Toparoa had moved around the field quickly to take fourth place ahead of Treasure Pond and Persia.

Demolish had Silver King beaten before the straight and he led into the last furlong by four

lengths, a margin he maintained until the end. Toparoa finished strongly, to take second place a length and a half ahead of the weakening Silver King. Appreciate battled on gamely for fourth three lengths behind Silver King, and he was followed by Loyal Chief, which was running on, ahead of Pack Drill and Persia. The Second Leg Kinsimm, gave the Gore trainer, R. J. Cochrane, his third training success for the day when she lasted to beat the fasterfinishing Count Aven by a nose in the second leg of the double, the Morven Handicap. In another close tussle for third, three lengths back, The Wanderer won by a nose from Her Ex. My Friend was a length back fifth, just ahead of Grey Light. Then there were three lengths to Lucky Sal and four to Red Tinge. The Wanderer and Her Ex received the worst of the start. Red Tinge was quickly in front and at the end of a furlong was closely attended by My Friend, Grey Light and The Wanderer, which had moved up quickly. Count Aven and Lucky Sal were next, with Her Ex at the rear. My Friend joined Red Tinge in the lead at the half-mile and these two led around the turn from Kinsimm, The Wanderer and Count Aven. Her Ex was still last. Kinsimm was in front at the furlong but had to be kept up to her work to hold off Count Aven, which came home with a strong run.
