CAR ECONOMY TRIAL
Ashburton Club’s Event
A successful car economy run was conducted over a distance of 140.6 miles on the week-end by the Ashburton Car Club.
J. Rapley, driving a Morris 1000, was the winner, achieving 50.7 miles per gallon. Rakaia was the starting point for the run and on the outward journey the cars passed through Oxford, Darfield, Waimakariri. Gorge, returning via Oxford, Christchurch, Lyttelton, Governor’s Bay and back to Christchurch. Drivers were allowed a maximum time to reach the different check points, and were penalised for time lost, but not for time gained. This penalty, however, did not affect the final result. Competitors’ cars were weighed at Rakaia and drivers were allowed to carry 7501 b of passengers, and luggage or ballast. Anything above this weight incurred a penalty. The following were the results: J. Rapley (Morris 1000), 50.7 m.p.g., 51.7 ton miles, 1; D. Bowden (Austin A5O), 35.1 m.p.g., 50.26 ton miles, 2; R. Findlay (Morris Oxford), 34.3 m.p.g., 49.19 ton miles, 3; P. Bodkin (Austin A3O), 44.6 m.p.g., 48.89 ton miles, 4; J. Lovatt (Austin A4O), 35.9 m.p.g., 48.82 ton miles, 5; A. Shannon • Morris Minor), 46.0 m.p.g., 48.65 ton miles, 6; L. Cromie (Chevrolet), 26.0 m.p.g., 48.1 ton miles, 7; R. Price (Vanguard), 2&T m.p.g., 45.70 ton miles, 8; R. Templeton (Vanguard), 30.2 m.p.g., and R. Barry (Morris Minor)), 46.8 m.p.g., 45.45 ton miles (equal) 9.
