BEACH-CLEANING EXPERIMENTS

Special Tractors Tried

A special type of track tractor, similar to that used by Sir Edmund Hillary in the Antarctic, was tried by the City Council for cleaning the Sumner beach recently. It was found to be most satisfactory in the loose sand, the reserves committee told the council last evening, but a tractor operated by the reserves department had proved equally efficient in manoeuvring on the beach with a trailer for picking up the debris. It had been impossible to pick up all the imall twigs and marine growth with anything that had been tried so far, the committee said. It hoped to have suitable equipment located or devised for cleaning beaches in time for consideration to be given on next year's estimates.
