Small Fire At University
Three fire engines answered a call at 10.30 p.m. yesterday to the biology department of the University of Canterbury. A small electric motor driving an air compressor had become overheated and caught fire. The automatic alarm immediately came into operation, and several dozen students in their pyjamas and dressing growns quickly arrived from a nearby hostel. In spite of a moderate shower of rain which was falling at the time, the arrival of each fire engine was greeted with prolonged cheering, and as the alarm bell finally ceased ringing a further round of cheers sped the firemen on their way. There was no damage
