PREMIUM BOND SCHEME

Opposition From Churchmen

(New Zealana Press Association> WELLINGTON, March 9.

Amazement and concern at the resolution passed by the Municipal Association conference in Christchurch supporting the introduction of the premium bond method of raising funds was expressed today by the Rev. J. S. Sommerville, convenor of the public questions committee of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. The committee met last night and considered the matter, Mr Somerville said. The committee believed such methods of raising funds were not worthy of this country’s best tradition nor in its best interests.

The very proposal and the fact that it was hardly discussed at the conference indicated how far the inroads of the gambling spirit have penetrated into public life, he said. The committee expressed the hope that nothing more would be heard of this scheme.
