STEELWORKS IN N.Z.
Minister Wants More Progress (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 9.
The Minister of Mines (Mr Hackett), is to call for an urgent report on ways of speeding up the development of New Zealand’s iron and steel industry. Mr Hackett, commenting yesterday on a report that a new £3om steelworks is to be built in South Australia, said: “From reports 1 have had the New Zealand project will also cost about £3om
„if expenditure includes a special •hydro-electric station- and it appears New Zealand will need
a big slice of overseas capital to develop an iron and steel works here.
“Two private enterprise groups in New Zealand are investigating the possibilities of an iron and steel industry here, but it is imperative these investigations should be speeded up. “It is obvious private enterprise and the Government will have to get round the table as soon as possible to map out a development programme and I intend to see that this is done. “Once we let it be known to the world that we are definite in our plan to develop the industry we should expect a quickening of interest overseas,” Mr Hackett said.
