Washdyke Second Leg Won By Toronto Boy

Toronto Boy followed up his good second to Stellar at Orari a fortnight earlier with a decisive win in the second leg of the double, the Washdyke Handicap. He raced in fifth or sixth position most of the way, moving up on • the outside of Radar, just behind the pacemaker, Toka Boy, racing to the straight, with Light

Blue, Battle Fling, Drioli and Whippy Dillon handiest of the others.

Toka Boy was in.trouble early in the run home and Toronto Boy continued his run to win well by a short length. Radar put in a strong run once she worked clear and she took second place a neck in front of the tiring Toka Boy. Whippy Dillon, after being well back most of the way, finished well for fourth a short length behind Toka Boy, with half a length back to Drioli. Battle Fling was right w u£> next, ahead of Shantung and Light Blue. Shantung, Battle Fling, Trojan and Fox ‘Able lost ground early. With just less than six fudongs left Fox Able and Trojan collided and both horses lost their drivers. In the mix-up Gold Deoro lost his driver. Alight in Form Alight returned to her best form with a most impressive win in the Temuka Handicap. She began well from 48 yards and was eighth when the field settled down. Captain Spider took over at the end of three furlongs, but Alight improved quickly after passing the half-mile to take control half a furlong further on. She was three lengths in front of Captain Spider approaching the straight, with Home Mail, Super Cloud, Dalmatian, Mighty Brigade, With You and Wraith next., Alight did not have to be driven out to win by two lengths and a half. With You, after racing in the middle of the field all the way, finished very strongly for second, a length and a half in front of Wraith, which got up in time to beat Home Mail by a neck for third. Super Cloud, after having every chance, was half a length back fifth, a similar distance in front of Judear. with Captain Spider. Mountain Brigade, Procrastinator and Dalmatian, which tangled at the furlong, ndxt. Elsinore in Form Elsinore gained a long overdue win when she beat Siberia in the Salisbury Handicap. Elsinore broke at the start and she had eight horses in *front of her ' when she settled down. She raced in this position until near the half-mile when she began to improve slightly. She was on the outside of Pagliacci and Derry Air at the- straight entrance, with Kawa. Fox Able, Lady Attack, Fontani and Siberia all handy. Elsinore raced clear about the furlong and she did~ not have to be driven out to win most’ convincingly by a length and a half.

Siberia received a lucky run through on the inner in the straight and he came home boldly for second, a long neck in front of the lightlysupported Fontani. which made up ground in the straight. Tony’s Cobber was never far away and he battled on for fourth, half a length behind Fontani, with a nose to Derry Air and a head to Allard. Fontenoy, Pagliacci, and Kawa were all close up.

Easy Win Rockn Roll gave the former Dutch reinsman, W. Van Overeen, his first winning drive in New Zealand when she gained an easy win in the Claremont Handicap. She raced in third place most of the way and followed Kauranui and Beau Clair into the straight, with Karingal, Lucie Manette and Front Rank handiest of the others. Confidently driven over • the final furlong, Rockn Roll won most decisively by half a length. Kauranui forced* all the pace and fought on well when challenged in the straight. He just shaded Beau Clair, which followed him all the way. Karingal, was not a serious threat, but held on for fourth, ahead of Lucie Manette, which trotted a useful race, for fifth, clear of Tribune, Front Rank, which was galloping. Thumberlina, and Fallacious. Favourite Wins The favouYite, Highland Heath, was much too good for his opponents in *hp Seadown Handicap and. after being handily placed all the way. •e- ran on strongly in the straight towin with something in hand. Belfast Lady, which was joined by Idle Jack in the middle stages of the race, forced most of the pace, and they turned for home ahead of Highland Heath, with Our Bridget, Ma rengo. Queen Bourbon, High Mark and Split Pin handy. Highland was sent after the leaders about the furlong post and he came on to win by a length and a half. Idle Jack battled on gamely when beaded and held second place a length and a half in front of Our Bridget, which had been close to the lead most of the way. StaY Bright finished strongly from well back to take fourth place a neck behind Our Bridget, with a short length to Split Pin and a similar distance to Russley Boy, which was followed by Marengo.
