EL KHOBAR TO BE RETIRED Leg Injury Ends Racing Career “The Press’ Special Service AUCKLAND, March 6. The racing career of El Khobar has ended. His owner, Mr W. Fisher, who is at present holidaying in Rotorua, said this yesterday He said that El Khobar would not be sold but would stand at a prominent stud in Kentucky. “After consultations with W. J. Hlrsch, El Khobar’s trainer in the United States, I have decided to take this course rather than run the risk of breaking him down completely,’’ added Mr Fisher El Khobar suffered the injury to his leg when he contested the 20,000 dollar Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita on February 18. Hirsch told Mr Fisher he suspected it occurred two furlongs from home when El Khobar held a commanding lead. The American jockey, E. Arcaro, who rode El- Khobar, apparently subscribers to this view. During his brief career in the United States, El Khobar earned more than 30,000 dollars in stakes. A five-year-old bay stallion by Gabador from Gay Abandon, El Khobar was bred by Mr F. R. Robertson at Greytown and bought by Mr Fisher for 1300 guineas at the 1954 National Yearling Sales at Trentham. Prepared by K. J. Heaton at Ellerslie, El Khobar started twice as a two-year-old for two wins. They were his only races in the Dominion. El Khobar went to Australia in July, 1955. An internal complaint prevented .him racing and he returned to New Zealand two months later. In May, 1956, he made his second trip across the Tasman. This time he did well and from seven attempts he won five races, including the Dctomben Ten Thousand. At his other starts he gained a second and a third. Although El Khobar has been beaten several times in the United States he has not let his New Zealand admirers down. He has won several races, including the Curragh Stock Farm Handicap at Santa Anita. In his race he set a course record of Imin 13 l-ssec for six furlongs and a half. 6400 Guineas For Three Brood Mares (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 7.
